The Magic of London at Christmas

The lights. The shop windows. Hyde Park. A Christmas show. Ice skating. Festive afternoon tea. One more walk through the city just to see it sparkle after dark.

And when you are bringing the family to London for the festive season, it is tempting to try to fit all of it in.

But the perfect family trip is not about doing everything, it is about choosing the moments your family will remember.

Whether you are arriving for Thanksgiving, spending a pre-Christmas weekend in the capital or making London home for Christmas itself, a little planning and the right place to come home to can make all the difference.

When Does Christmas Begin in London?

Earlier than you might think.

By November, London begins its transformation. Christmas lights appear across the city, department store windows take on their festive displays and seasonal experiences begin opening their doors.

By the second half of the month, the festive season is well underway.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland returns from 19th November 2026 until 3rd January 2027, bringing rides, ice skating, shows, festive food and family attractions to Hyde Park.

For families, this makes late November a particularly lovely time to visit.

The anticipation of Christmas is everywhere, but the big day is still ahead of you.

And for American families travelling over Thanksgiving, it means you can celebrate one holiday while London is already dressed for the next.

Choose Where You Stay Around the London You Want to Experience

At Christmas, location matters.

London becomes busier during the festive season, so being able to step outside and already find yourself close to the places you want to visit can change the pace of a family trip completely.

At Buckingham & Lloyds, our London apartments place families in two exceptional neighbourhoods.

Kensington: Hyde Park and the Museums on Your Doorstep

Our Hyde Park Gate apartments put one of London’s most famous green spaces just outside, while South Kensington’s museums are close by.

For younger families especially, this makes planning a day remarkably easy.

Spend the morning at the Natural History Museum or Science Museum, wander back through Kensington Gardens and return home when everyone needs a break.

Then, from 19th November, Winter Wonderland transforms Hyde Park into one of London’s biggest Christmas attractions.

When Hyde Park is already your neighbourhood, fitting it into the family itinerary becomes considerably easier.

Knightsbridge: Christmas London Within Easy Reach

Across the park, Knightsbridge puts families close to another side of festive London.

Our apartments are set on a peaceful residential street just 300 metres from Harrods, placing festive shopping, Hyde Park and some of central London’s most recognisable sights within easy reach.

At Christmas, the neighbourhood comes into its own.

Shop windows change, streets glow after dark and an ordinary walk home can become part of the festive experience.

From here, families can venture towards Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly and the West End before returning to the quieter surroundings of their own apartment.

The best location is ultimately the one that works for your family.

And at this time of year, being able to experience more of London with a little less travelling can be a luxury in itself.

Book the Big Festive Moments Before You Arrive

Some London moments are better left to spontaneity.

Christmas in London is not always one of them.

The most popular festive attractions, theatre performances and experiences can become busy, particularly at weekends and as Christmas approaches.

So choose the experiences that matter most to your family and book those first.

Winter Wonderland operates with allocated entry slots. Once inside, visitors can stay for as long as they like, but booking ahead gives families a much better chance of securing the day and time that suits their plans.

Then there is London’s festive theatre.

A Christmas show, ballet or family production can easily become one of the highlights of the trip.

The key is not to book every available hour.

Choose one or two things you would be genuinely disappointed to miss.

Everything else can fit around them.

A Few of Our Festive Picks

If you are wondering where to begin, these are the kinds of experiences we would build a family festive stay around.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

The obvious one when Hyde Park is practically on your doorstep.

Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, excluding Christmas Day, with everything from the Giant Observation Wheel and ice skating to the Magical Ice Kingdom, circus performances and Santa Land.

You could easily spend several hours here, so rather than trying to squeeze it between other plans, make it one of the main events of the day.

Take to the Ice

Ice skating is one of those London Christmas traditions that works just as well for adults as it does for children.

Winter Wonderland is home to the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink, while seasonal rinks appear at some extraordinary locations around London.

For 2026, families can also skate in front of the Queen’s House in Greenwich, at Battersea Power Station or in the middle of the West End at Leicester Square.

Peak sessions can sell out, so this is another one worth deciding on before you arrive.

See London After Dark

Christmas lights are perhaps the easiest festive experience of all.

There does not necessarily need to be a destination.

Wrap up warm and wander through the city, taking in the displays around Regent Street, Piccadilly and London’s shopping districts.

For younger children or tired legs, an open-top Christmas lights bus tour is another way to see the city illuminated without adding another long walk to the day.

Make Time for a Christmas Show

London’s theatres are particularly special at this time of year.

Whether your family prefers a West End musical, a traditional Christmas production or something created especially for younger children, an afternoon at the theatre also gives everyone a few hours away from the winter weather.

Choose something the whole family will genuinely enjoy rather than booking a show simply because it feels like something you should do at Christmas.

Where to Celebrate Thanksgiving in London

For American families, the festive season can begin with Thanksgiving.

In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November, by which point Christmas in London will already be well underway.

It creates quite a special combination.

You can spend the afternoon exploring a London dressed for Christmas and still return to celebrate Thanksgiving in a way that feels familiar.

If you would rather leave the cooking to someone else, a number of London restaurants embrace the occasion with dedicated Thanksgiving menus.

JW Steakhouse, Park Lane

For a classic American-inspired celebration close to Knightsbridge, JW Steakhouse serves a three-course Thanksgiving menu.

The 2026 menu includes traditional turkey with generous seasonal sides, alongside suitably autumnal desserts including pumpkin. Its Park Lane location also makes it an easy option for families staying in Knightsbridge.

Riding House Cafés

For something a little more relaxed, Riding House has made Thanksgiving something of a tradition.

Its feast is served family-style, with free-range turkey accompanied by dishes including cornbread stuffing, maple-buttered sweet potatoes and truffled mac and cheese, before pumpkin pie to finish.

The sharing-table format feels particularly fitting for a family Thanksgiving.

The Stafford London, St James’s

For a more formal celebration, The Stafford is offering dedicated Thanksgiving lunch and dinner menus created by chef Michael Caines.

Lunch is a three-course celebration, while dinner becomes a five-course tasting menu, a lovely option if Thanksgiving itself is one of the big occasions of your London trip.

Whichever you choose, Thanksgiving is one of those dates worth reserving ahead of time.

Or Celebrate at Home

Of course, one of the advantages of staying in a private apartment is that you do not have to make another restaurant reservation at all.

There is a proper kitchen. A dining table. A living room. Space for the whole family to gather without another busy restaurant or queue to navigate.

Our team can arrange groceries ahead of your arrival, or a private chef can turn Thanksgiving dinner at home into an occasion of its own.

Keep the traditions that matter to your family. Add a little London to the rest.

Then, once dinner is finished, you can decide whether the evening calls for Christmas lights outside or pyjamas and a film on the sofa.

Don’t Plan Every Hour

A festive family trip can quickly become a sequence of reservations: breakfast, museum, lunch, Christmas attraction, dinner, theatre, repeat.

It looks wonderful on an itinerary.

It can feel rather different by day three.

Children get tired. Plans run late. Someone wants to spend another hour somewhere you expected to visit for twenty minutes.

Having your own London apartment gives the day room to change.

Come home for lunch.

Spend a couple of hours doing absolutely nothing.

Let younger children nap while everyone else relaxes in the living room.

Have dinner at home instead of joining another queue or rushing to make another reservation.

Then head back out for the evening if everyone feels like it.

The best itinerary has enough planned to feel exciting and enough space left for the holiday to actually feel like a holiday.

Make Your London Home Part of Christmas

Where you stay does not have to be the place you simply return to between activities.

It can be part of the trip.

That feels especially true at this time of year.

There are Christmas films on the sofa after a cold day outside. Shopping bags by the door. Breakfast together before anyone is properly ready. Children comparing their favourite part of the day around the dining table.

And perhaps an evening when everyone decides that staying home sounds better than going back out.

With separate bedrooms, generous living spaces and fully equipped kitchens, a Buckingham & Lloyds apartment gives families room to live together while they are in London.

Add housekeeping and a team able to help with the details, and you have the independence of your own London home without having to take care of everything yourself.

That balance can be particularly valuable during one of the busiest times of the year.

The Perfect Festive Weekend in London with Family

If you are wondering how it could all come together, resist the temptation to create an enormous checklist.

Three days can be enough to experience a lot.

Day One: Settle Into London

Arrive, unpack and give everyone a little time to settle in.

If you are staying in Kensington, wander through Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens. From Knightsbridge, explore the neighbourhood and make the short walk towards Harrods.

As darkness falls, head into central London to see the Christmas lights.

Then keep the first evening easy.

Dinner nearby or back at the apartment. No rushing. No enormous itinerary.

You have only just arrived.

Day Two: Make It the Big Festive Day

This is the day for the experience you booked in advance.

That might mean Winter Wonderland, ice skating, a Christmas show or a combination of one main activity with time exploring London around it.

Leave enough space either side that nobody feels hurried.

And if you are visiting over Thanksgiving, make the evening your celebration, whether that means a London restaurant serving a traditional menu or gathering around your own table back at the apartment.

Day Three: Follow the Family

Keep the final day flexible.

Visit the Natural History Museum. Go Christmas shopping. Head back into Hyde Park. Find somewhere for afternoon tea. See a matinee.

Or simply return to the place everyone enjoyed most.

Not every great family day needs to have been planned weeks in advance.

Staying for Christmas Day?

If your trip includes Christmas Day itself, plan a little differently.

London becomes much quieter on 25 December, with many attractions closed and normal public transport not operating as usual.

But there is something rather special about seeing the capital at its quietest.

A walk through London, Christmas lunch and time together back at the apartment can create an entirely different side of the city.

And when you have your own kitchen, living room and dining space, staying home for part of Christmas Day feels less like missing out and more like having your own.
